Preparing your personal
income tax return

Filing your annual personal income tax return is a chore that most of us do not look forward to. While it is true that the tax authorities pre-populate some of the tax return for you to “just” check, they do not have all relevant information. Life events may have taken place in the tax period that affect your tax return. Also, tax rules tend to be complex, so mistakes will be made. We offer tax preparation services for directors/majority shareholders and business owners. Our services will not only save you time, but also give you peace of mind that your taxes are done right.

Personal income tax

Personal income tax rules tend to be complex and many exceptions apply. That is why you need to remember of few things. The tax authorities will have pre-populated your tax return to some extent, but certain information, for instance about your income from business activities, incoming dividend distributions, gifts made, loans and receivables, medical expenses, foreign income, etc., will be missing. This information does have to be reported, however.

Perhaps you have gone through a life event during the tax period that has an impact on your tax return. They have to be reported as well. Some examples are highlighted below.

Events that have an impact for your return

  • Buying or selling a home: how do you calculate your home equity, what fees are deductible and does all interest paid qualify for tax relief?
  • Getting married, moving in with your partner, getting divorced or death: these events affect your joint assessment and your joint income as well as the distribution of assets and income in your tax return.
  • Starting or discontinuing your business: which facilities are available to you and what do you need to report where in your tax return?
  • Acquiring or selling shares in a private limited company: do you have a substantial interest and when is a distribution by this company taxable?
  • Taking out a loan: does the interest on the loan qualify for tax relief?
  • Investing in commercial property: which tax facilities are available to you and how do you apply for them?
  • Buying bitcoins or other cryptocurrencies: where in your tax return do they have to be reported?

How do we go about preparing and filing your personal income tax return?

Moore DRV has negotiated a deadline extension with the Dutch tax authorities, meaning that we are permitted to file your tax return about a year later than the official deadline. This gives us enough time to discuss it with you before filing it and to make sure it is correct. In the process of preparing your personal income tax return, we will ask you to provide the required documents, such as your annual financial summaries, information about special events and other details. You can send them to us at your convenience. We will also request that you authorise us to retrieve information about your tax position from the tax authorities.

While preparing your tax return, we will ask you questions; this allows us to report all information in the correct category in the tax return as required by law. We will always keep an eye out for opportunities to optimise your tax position. Quality is key. We will not send your tax return to you for review unless one of our experienced tax experts has checked it first.

Insight into your income and assets

We will send your tax return to you in digital format as part of a clear and transparent tax report. Our report will also include a three-year summary of your income and assets. If you want, we can also prepare a statement of assets and liabilities for you to help you gain insight into your financial position. To save you time, your tax return is automatically forwarded to the tax authorities once you have approved it, all at just the press of a button.

What happens after your personal income tax return has been filed?

The tax authorities will process your tax return after you have filed it. They will usually send you a provisional tax assessment based on your tax return after about six to 12 weeks. If there are no anomalies, you will receive a final assessment after some time. The tax authorities occasionally take a little longer to issue a provisional or final tax assessment. If you want, we can contact them for you to ask about the reasons for the delay.

We always check your personal income tax assessment

We will answer any questions the tax authorities may have about your tax return in dialogue with you and we will check the tax assessments you have been issued. We will contact you if we find that the tax assessment is not in line with the tax return.

Objections

If you disagree with a tax assessment, we can file an objection for you or an appeal. We will always do so in consultation with you.

Fee for preparing your personal income tax return

Rather than charging a standard fee for our services, we tailor our fee for preparing your personal income tax return to the complexity of your tax position. We would be happy to discuss your requirements with you, based on which we can give you a fee estimate.
